Conspiracy theorists make monkeys of us all

Postby Brian Jordan » Fri Jul 06, 2018 9:41 am

That's the title of an article in The Times by David Aaronvitch. I'm not sure conspiracy is the right word: he begins
Evolution, an Indian government minister said this week, is scientifically wrong. Dr Satyapal Singh has form for this sort of nonsense. Back in January, he argued that the man-from-monkey thesis was absurd partly because “no books we have read or the tales told to us by our grandparents have said they saw an ape turning into a man”. That’s why he did not consider himself “the child of a monkey”. He called for changes to school and college curriculums to reflect the fact. This week he told Hindu nationalists that in a decade or two everyone would accept his view.
(paywall but you can subscribe to read a few articles)
He continues with anti-vaxxers and climate change deniers and can't resist a few political swipes but his conclusion is valid: that readers should examine the methodology as well as the conclusions of similar claims. In particular, school science teaching should concentrate more on methodology and logic - certainly more than it did in my day.
