The play's the thing

God Only Knows
The Telegraph notes that the playwrights insist that the millionaire in "God Only Knows" is not in any way inspired by any specific person. A few links follow:
This script-in-hand production by writing partnership Ed Waugh and Trevor Wood is a satirical examination of religious fundamentalism and faith schools.

a new work focusing on a self-made millionaire who funds an academy where Creationism is taught as scientific fact.

There is real anger and concern that by virtue of wealth, a millionaire benefactor can impose what is taught to children in state schools.
God Only Knows isn’t anti-religious, it’s a pro-education play and the sooner people realise what is happening today, in the north east, in some state-funded academies, the sooner we can expose this pseudo-science and the miseducation of our children.

Peter Vardy's church (Brethren) is hosting a lecture/presentation by Phillip Bell of Creation Ministries International. Apparently Vardy is on record as claiming that creationism is valid because all the members of his church believe it. Such is the intellectual power of an O level in music when it comes to science and education.

The term he used was, “sing from the same sing sheet.”

'If we are educating children I think it is our duty to tell them about both, absolutely. We tell them about Evolution and we tell them about Creation. It's up to the children to make their minds up.'
But what about the 200 years of evidence that proves Evolution as fact?
'I think that is brainwashing.'
Even the Pope accepts Darwinian theory as truth. In which part of the Church, I wonder, would Vardy place himself?
'We have an independent evangelical church called the Bethany Centre where I live, in Houghton le Spring. And it is packed to the rafters every week. So there are plenty of folks there who sing from the same hymn sheet as I do.'

I think the play sounds a great idea. Parody and ridicule are always the best tools for popping the balloon. We should encourage more.
