It's not just the veil - or is that the wrong language, do they mean hymen? - but all sorts of religious devotees seem to go in for specialised headgear. Even the memetic baseball cap (is wearing it backwards a schism?) seems to be an article of faith with disgruntled youth.

Anyone who has read any Pratchett knows the vital link between head apparel and status.

Pope: Big funny hat, all/many nuns, cardinal: less big, still funny lots of nuns, priest: lesser hat (if at all), not funny minor access to nuns, has to console self with altar boys.

Archbish CofE: Big hat, vicar: no hat, wife, bicycle clips, hallitosis, possibility of guitar.

General: Flatish hat, lots of goldy bits and flashy crap, hat unlikely to be metal, private: round hat, no goldy bits, hat likely to be metal and associated with higher chance of incipient death.

Ascot: custom made fruit and dromadery hat for the lady, sodding chimney stack for the gents, Dog and Duck on a friday: baseball cap at most, or comedy breast hat for stag do and best.

Get the picture? Big, gaudy=important, small, functional=high chance of death and minor access to nuns. Think sexual selection and peacock's tails.

Dear Loesesss ,

I think "Strata" says it all.

No Earthly reason why I bothered to say that, but I did, so.

Dat's wot I did.
